Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a “Pediatric Dentist” and a “General Dentist”?
I have been asked this question many times over the years and would like to explain some of the benefits of utilizing a Pediatric Dentist for your child.
What is a Pediatric Dentist?
A pediatric dentist is a specialist for infants, children, and teenagers. Just like children visit with a pediatrician because of their specific needs, a pediatric dentist has been specially trained to help children with their dental needs. To become a pediatric dentist requires an extra 2-3 years of training after finishing dental school and receiving a dental degree. In their training programs they receive additional training in the areas of: anesthesia and sedation, behavior management, infant and baby oral health, pregnancy and its relationship to dental health, treatment for children with special needs, the role of growth and development and their effect on the developing permanent teeth. In addition, pediatric dentists and staff are aware of the special needs that children require. They understand that going to the dentist can be a new and /or scary experience. They want children to enjoy a healthy smile!
When should my child visit the dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend visiting a dentist by age 1. By visiting with you and your child we can evaluate you child’s teeth at a young age and avoid problems that can arise. Cavities are a very common problem for many children. The primary goal of a pediatric dentist is to help you prevent dental problems with your child’s teeth. If treatment is necessary at a young age a pediatric dentist is trained help your child and can explain your options for treatment.
